From Katja Hujo - Geneva, Switzerland

Bob Deacon was a longstanding friend and collaborator of the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD). His work on global and regional social policy was an important complement to the stronger country focus UNRISD pursued in its social policy research. He collaborated on many of our projects, always willing to share his vast knowledge and advice, to critically discuss new avenues of thought. His enthusiasm and energy was impressive, he was a tireless advocate for a more equal and just world. He believed in leadership, agency and collective action - at all levels; only together, in a strong coalition of progressive thinkers, activists, bureaucrats and policy makers he was convinced that we could make a dent into poverty, inequality and human sufferings. Let's honor his legacy in just doing this! I was very sad to receive the news that Bob had passed away. His last contribution to UNRISD's work was a blog he wrote for our "Transformation Conversation" series a year ago. My thoughts are with his family and friends, Katja Hujo Senior Research Coordinator United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) Palais des Nations D-214, 1211 Geneva 10, Switzerland
